NoRoutine Books is an independent publishing initiative dedicated to designing and printing unique fine arts books. All publications are strictly limited to 99 copies (+AP) with some unique elements included. Post‐printing processes are finalized in the NoRoutine Books studio.

NoRoutine Books works closely with artists to conceptualize and produce their works in book format. Through a collaborative process, NoRoutine Books ask artists to push the boundaries of their practice and experiment with different printing and binding processes. Often the book becomes an extension of the art piece.

NoRoutine Books was founded by two artists, Vilma Samulionytė and Gytis Skudzinskas, in summer 2014.

Our publications have won or been shortlisted for prizes.

Empty Pages! Open Call!

First of all, we have to apologize for the delay in announcing the short list of the ’Empty Pages‘ open call.

We got a lot more work than we expected. We were very happy to see the artist’s works from Santiago to New Delhi, from London to Johannesburg. A large amount of amazing artwork that should be published in book format. We strive to reduce the number of candidates because we are a small publishing platform and can only publish one book. And our main criteria was whether we would be able to reveal the selected work together with the artist in the format of the publication shown in an open call.

In the final, we stayed with three authors to contact and decide which work could be published this fall.
So the short list is Anthony Hawley, Barbara Pearsall, Quintin Teszeri !i!i!i!i!i!i!i!i!i!i!i!i!i!

Vibrations of Material Universe. Thirst of Gold

Vibrations of Material Universe. Thirst of Gold

Gold is an extension of human happiness, and so are everyday images. As every coin has two sides, so has every image.

Seeking to make visible an otherwise invisible threat to the biosphere, contributed from analogue photographic image-making, I slowly create a layer of water on light-sensitive photographic paper and carefully inject the chemicals into it. For me, it serves as a comprehensive gesture, where the aesthetics of hand-made pollution are revealed. Where a watery blue becomes golden.

It’s a gaze and a movement of my hand that recognises water as a universal solvent, treats it as a source of life and transformation and acknowledges it as a collector of chemical waste. Whether it is from large-scale production or one activity, a contaminated substance is created that finds its way back to us through its flow.

There is no way we can avoid our contribution to the ecosystem. No matter how small. But neither can we avoid photographs of this kind exploiting the chemical and physical reactions of physical phenomena themselves. Becoming documents of their own.

dear donald…

dear donald…

From January 21st 2017-January 21 2018 Anthony Hawley embarked upon a year-long daily drawing project called “Drawings for Donald”: a text-based drawing a day, every day, for 365 days, all for Donald. Each one begins with an epistolary “dear donald...”. His goal was that these would haunt the present, haunt us out of now; haunt language and the abuse of it by political powers. The book includes a set of “spells” created in response to the drawings by a group of other artists, writers, composers and musicians including Angélica Negrón, Laura Sims, Missy Mazzoli, Gabriela Lena Frank, Krista Caballero and more.

This multi-layered book project combines images from the artist’s family archive, her own photographs and research material. Historical and personal narratives are told using visual means. By retelling her own family experience, the artist analyses global historical and geopolitical contexts and events during WWII on the border of Lithuania and East Prussia – and its aftermath today.

Layers

Layers

Layers’ is a story about ideas and dreams and their materialisation in the physical world in the countryside of Latgalia, eastern Latvia. They are visions and plans that have clustered and ‘landed’ on the ground in an appearance of different and extraordinary buildings like lakes in Latvian tales that fly in the sky until they find their right place on the ground. Often these buildings have been built manually by their owners, without the legal planning procedures and can’t be seen in maps or plans, as if they still exist slightly above ground, only as visions in the minds of their creator. These visions, even though they have reached the ground and acquired physical shapes, keep developing and transforming affected by various circumstances, so creating newer and newer layers not only in the landscape of the countryside but also in the mental map of Latgalia and Latvia.

Staged pictures

Staged pictures

Staged Pictures is a collaborative project by Lithuanian artists, where the participating artists are ‘re-acting’ well-known characters from classical paintings, gaining a new identity and becoming the characters themselves. It analyses the relationship between painting and photography, changes the relationship between painting and reality, and is one of the first photographic performances in Lithuanian art. The photographs were created in the last decade of the 20th century.”

Gabrielė Gervickaitė: “03 is my creative reflection on the soviet times, when I was born and lived for a while. It is my intention to understand deeper which power systems are functioning now and how soviet imagery still influences the times of today. It is important to me which aesthetics and ethics were used while imaging the human body in medical books and tutorials. Comparing medical illustrations that were used in the past and those that are used now, I see forms of medical control. I analyse which ethical views and forms of power exist – what the norms used to be and which are created now.”

Photograms (NRB postcard set)

Photograms (NRB postcard set)

The artist Valdemaras Manomaitis creates his photograms in a bit different way then we are used see. Normally the object is placed on a photo-paper and held in a light. After developing it we see its contour. Valdemaras Manomaitis is using light of an object itself, in this case, mobile phone. This way it transfers a telephone SMS to a paper and returns the modern technology to an analogical way of information transmitting. “Photograms” is released as postcard set and offers to send a message not in a digital form, but in epistolary way...

Photoobjects

Photoobjects

The works of Arunas Kulikauskas are like everyday notes and diaries of different experiences. He creates an intimate picture of his surrounding by capturing domestic, work or travel moments. Later these images are polaroid-transferred onto simple everyday objects found at home, in the yard or wherever he is. In his work he refuses any kind of importance to exaltations, events or subjects. He is always focused and respectful towards the photographer’s craft. This book as well as his photography are created while trying to highlight the idea of handcrafted work, the individuality of each piece and authentic experiences in everyday life. The pages of the book are individually torn apart and each cover is uniquely created by the artist.

Tada / Then

Tada / Then

The book reveals photographs taken in between 1985 – 1995 (last decade of the Communist regime in Lithuania) which where used as a visual material and inspiration for paintings. In the photographs, we find surreal Soviet-era surroundings. The constructive look of the author purifies the Soviet architectural landscape towards the symetric compositions ant turns them into certain sculptural compositions. The introductions essay by philosopher Leonidas Donskis “Started and unfinished reality” fits few possibilities for interpretation. First, photographs are showing unfinished remains of the totalitarian system, and on the other hand, those sketches are becoming pieces of art in their own right.

Burning slides

Burning slides

Touched by the flame, images retrieved from strangers’ archives change their structure. The nature and urban scenes they originally depicted mutate into abstract glimmers of parallel worlds. Creative rather than destructive, the flame expands the borders of perception and interpretation of these images, opening up paradoxical depth in their surface seemingly out of nothing.

Some thesis on photography

Some thesis on photography

Skudzinskas’ creative methodics and philosophy can be identified as a certain metaphysics of photography or even radiology of photography. He has no interest in the image as such; what is central in his work is the innards of the image, the underlying principles of its functioning, or its placement in a wider contextual system. Skudzinskas often abandons any physical artefacts of photography entirely by substituting them with the signs of a different kind-for example, texts. Preview book on Issuu.

Album

Album

Album is formed from found photographs. Images have lost their original function (memory). To be more specific, no one remembers what is depicted in these photographs and why these images were created. The most understandable signs on photographs are notes and time left marks on the backs of found images. The reverse of photographs in the installation and the book eliminates the primary function of the non-verbal message. Only notes and time affected surfaces allow perceivers to interpret the “invisible” story. But you always know that there is something else. Preview “Album” on Issuu.
